Annibale Carrache
Le Christ de Caprarola
1597
Catégorie:
Strongly influenced by Correggio’s painting of the same subject in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Parma, this etching shows the body of Christ lying on the ground, with his head resting on the lap of the Virgin. Practically fainting, she is supported by Mary Magdalen while Saint John is seen holding Christ’s right hand to display his wounds. The inscription on the second state of this print indicates that the work was etched in Caprarola. The print is, in fact, known by the name of this city.
