Annibale Carrache

Un joueur de luth et autres études

avant 1595

This sheet was one of the first to enter the National Gallery of Canada with the initial acquisition of European drawings in 1911. Not in an ideal state of preservation, the drawing is nonetheless one of the finest and most intriguing in the entire collection. It contains a number of disconnected studies, some taken from life and others clearly made spontaneously from the artist’s imagination. The main drawing on the recto is of a lute player seated on a ledge and performing to an attentive audience of one. The sketches provide examples of the informality and spontaneous creativity of the Carracci drawing style in recording their surroundings with a perceptive eye.
