Lawren S. Harris

Billboard (Jazz)

1921
Harris focused on urban subjects throughout the 1920s. Compared with other contemporary urban scenes by the artist, such as Black Court, Halifax, this work is more experimental in terms of its composition, bright palette and application of paint. Despite the painting’s vibrancy, the two lonely figures and the posters falling from the billboard in tattered strips project an almost tangible sense of poverty.
